Radloff reaches 200 game milestone with hometown Hawks

This past Saturday, Nipawin Hawks captain Finley Radloff suited up for his hometown team for the 200th time in the regular season.

Radloff, 20, becomes just the 12th player in the team’s Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) history to adorn the Hawks jersey for that many games. He said he’s proud of the accomplishment that isn’t reached very often in today’s junior hockey landscape.

“It was a really special night for me – 200 games is a really big milestone,” he said. “Just realizing that not very many people get the opportunity to do this. I am grateful for the opportunity Nipawin has given me, and Tad [Head coach Tad Kozun] has given me, friends, family, all the support, it means a lot.”

Radloff was originally from La Ronge, Sask., but relocated to Nipawin prior to his 10th birthday and his hockey career flourished while watching his hometown team. He played his U18 AAA years with the Tisdale Trojans before spending all four years in the SJHL with Nipawin.

“Growing up watching the Hawks, you never expect to play for your hometown, but you wish upon it. It’s awesome to get to live at home, I have that support, we have the best fans in the league, it’s awesome playing in front of them every night,” he said.

Radloff was named the team’s captain prior to his 19 year-old season. Over his 200 games, Radloff has scored 61 goals and added 50 assists. He did play five playoff games for Nipawin as well in the 2023 playoffs, scoring twice in a first-round series loss to Humboldt. He hopes for a longer playoff run this year, leaving behind a legacy that will live on for future hometown players.

“I want to be remembered as the guy that wants to be the guy. I want to be known as a leader, and knowing I gave it all out there. I don’t want to be the guy that looks back and thinks, man I wish I would have gave it more,” he added.

Kozun is also a Nipawin, and knew Radloff for many years prior to coaching him. He said being along for Radloff’s journey has been a highlight of his tenure behind the Hawks bench.

“Great human being, been our captain for two years, amazing accomplishment. We are super happy he has done it all in a Hawks jersey,” Kozun said.

Radloff and the Hawks are in Yorkton Friday to take on the Terriers. Faceoff is 7 p.m. while the pregame show on 750 Beach Radio will begin at 6:45 p.m.
