Mustangs welcome league-best Bombers for ultimate test

Feb 27, 2026 | 7:10 PM

The two best teams in the SJHL, at least recently, will faceoff twice this weekend in a home-and-home set.

Beginning in Melfort on Friday, the Mustangs will play host to the top-ranked Flin Flon Bombers, before the pair of teams head back to Northern Manitoba on Saturday.

“It’s a big weekend for us, no doubt about it, so it’s definitely important to start off on the right foot on Friday. We just have to play our game and see how things go from there,” explained forward Nolan Patterson. “Obviously, they’re a good team, but we know that we’re a good team as well, so it’s definitely gonna be a great weekend of hockey.”

The Stangs are currently riding a nine-game win streak, which has pushed them up to sixth place in the SJHL standings.

Flin Flon, meanwhile, has been in first place for most of the year and has won four in a row, as well as eight of their last 10.

“We’re feeling really good right now, and all the boys are really clicking together, so we’re ready to go this weekend,” Patterson added. “They have a really good forward group, so we know we’re gonna have to defend really well, and honestly, if we just play our game, and all the boys are going right off the bat, then I know we can be successful.”

The Blue and Green have yet to be successful against the Bombers this season, losing all the previous six meetings; however, three of those contests have ended with just one-goal differences.
