Mustangs play final regular season home game in hopes of locking down sixth

Mar 11, 2026 | 12:04 PM

The Melfort Mustangs will play their final home game of the regular season on Wednesday when they play host to the visiting Estevan Bruins.

Melfort will enter the contest with the opportunity to clinch the sixth seed in the SJHL (with a win), locking them into a meeting with the third seed come the first round of the playoffs (next weekend).

The Mustangs are 2 and 1 against the Bruins this year, having lost the first matchup but winning the last two, 3-2 and 4-1, respectively.

The Blue and Green are coming off a busy weekend, which saw them split their weekend set, as well as host their annual awards banquet.

Friday night, their struggles continued against their division rivals, the Nipawin Hawks, as the Stangs fell 3-1, ending their previous 12-game win streak. The contest was within a single-goal margin until the final 30 seconds, when the Hawks added an empty netter.

Saturday then came, and Melfort celebrated the achievements of their players and staff this season.

Award winners included Bo Eisner (Top Scorer, Top Defensive Defenceman, Most Valuable Defenceman, and Most Valuable Player), Austin Shepherd (Community Involvement, Plus/Minus Award, Crunch Award/Most Hits, and Top Defensive Forward), forward Tristin Ziola (Most Dedicated and Hardest Working Player), forward Nolan Patterson (Most Popular Player and Hardest Hitter Award), forward/defenceman Danton Cox (Most Improved Player and Dylan Ashe Memorial Scholarship), forward Jack McHarg (Scholastic Achievement), forward Luke Mackenzie (Most Spirited Player), forward and captain Zayden Sadlemyer (3 Star Selection), goaltender Kason Kobelka (Rookie of the Year), defenceman and Melfort native Cooper Atkinson (Fan Choice Award), and sports dietitian Andrea Banadyga (Shawn Mason Unsung Hero Award).

Next up for the Mustangs was a Sunday afternoon contest, as they played host to the Yorkton Terriers. The Blue and Green were able to get back in the win column with a 4-3 victory, despite being outshot 40-20.

The Stangs are 16-9-2 at the Northern Lights Palace this season, which is where Wednesday’s game will take place, beginning with a 7:30 p.m. puck drop.
