Hawks flightless in loss to Flin Flon

The Hawks gave up an early third period goal, allowing the Bombers to go in front during Tuesday’s game at the Whitney Forum leading to a 5-1 loss, their 15th in a row in Flin Flon.

Wrapping up the season series between the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) division rivals, the Hawks were seeking their first win on the road versus Flin Flon since Feb. 15, 2022.

The Bombers opened the scoring in the first period, taking a 1-0 lead into the intermission. The Hawks played arguably their best period of the season in the second but were only able to generate one goal when Brady Seabrook tied the game at 1-1. Head Coach Tad Kozun said the team could not sustain the pace against the top ranked Bombers.

“I thought that second period was one of the best we’ve played,” Kozun said on the postgame show on 750 Beach Radio. “We didn’t carry it over obviously, they get a lucky break there on a high stick goal, none of them (officials) seen it, so what are you going to do? You’ve got to be able to bounce back from that.”

Nipawin continued to press in the third period while down a goal but could not generate the equalizer. Flin Flon added an insurance goal with five minutes left; Nipawin allowed a second Bombers powerplay goal a minute later and an empty net goal while pushing to tie the game. Kozun said the Hawks had their openings to finally snap the losing streak.

“We had our chances, during that four-on-four we had tonnes of opportunities, we just weren’t able to put them in the back of the net in the third,” Kozun added.

The news got worse for the Hawks with Weyburn beating the Millionaires Tuesday. Nipawin and the Red Wings are tied with 70 points in fourth, the last seeding to host games one and two of the first round. Nipawin has one game remaining against the Mustangs at home Friday. The Red Wings play Estevan twice on the weekend. The Hawks could still pass the North Stars into third as well, the Battlefords take on Kindersley Thursday and Friday.

Kozun said all the Hawks can do is control their own destiny and that’s a win to cap the regular season at the Centennial Arena.

“It’s the last kick of the can in the regular season and we have to start playing for real here,” he concluded.

Friday night’s game begins at 7 p.m., it will be broadcasted on CJVR beginning at 6:45 p.m.
