Warmer weather, mixed precipitation in forecast

A new weather system coming into Saskatchewan is bringing some warmth. 

Environment and Climate Change Canada Meteorologist Justin Shelley said the weather pattern has shifted, as a system from the west is bringing warmer temperatures. 

“We’re going to see those temperatures continue to climb through the middle of the week,” Shelley said. 

The warmup will stick around for a few days before temperatures dip back down below zero. 

“For the meantime, those temperatures are going to be close to, or slightly above average for the duration of the week.”

High temperatures in the northeast should be around 3 C for Thursday and Friday. Humboldt could hit 6 C by Friday, while Prince Albert will in the 5 or 6 C range Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. La Ronge will hover around the freezing mark late in the work week, while North Battleford could hit 10 C Tuesday and 9 C on Thursday. Conditions could also be windy on Tuesday as the warm weather arrives, with gusts approaching 60 km/h in some areas at times. 

Shelley said there will be a mixed bag of precipitation off-and-on throughout the week. Showers or flurries could fall on occasion this week, depending on how warm it is at the time. He said significant snowfall is in the forecast for the Rockies at times this week, and that moisture could extend into Saskatchewan at times.  

“After today, we are seeing another risk of mixed precipitation starting late overnight tonight and into tomorrow morning, with the potential of… anywhere from light flurries to a risk of freezing rain,” Shelley said. 

Wednesday will feature a chance of wet snow or showers, depending on the temperature. Another weaker system will come into the province Thursday into Friday with mixed precipitation a possibility. There could be more light snow and a risk of freezing rain through Saturday morning. Snowfall accumulations should be greater further north, but Shelley said there is still a lot of time for their weather models to shift. 

The normal daytime high for this time of year is around –2 C, with lows at –13 C.
