Trevor Blevins: Citizen of the Year

Mar 27, 2026 | 4:56 PM

One of the most prominent sports figures in North East Saskatchewan has been recognized by his community.

Melfort Mustangs’ head coach Trevor Blevins has been honoured by his hometown as Citizen of the Year.

The honour comes from the Melfort Trade Alliance Chamber of Commerce and their Mel-Bex Awards.

“It definitely means a lot, and it’s quite shocking, but I’m really appreciative. There are a lot of people to thank because it’s a program and it’s not just about one person. There are many people who make our organization very successful, and I appreciate all their efforts. There are many people who I feel are more deserving, but I will graciously take the acknowledgement,” Blevins told northeastNOW.

“I’m very thankful and proud to be from Melfort, born and raised here, and I take a lot of pride in our community. There are a lot of people who have done so much for Melfort, and I think that’s what is awesome about it. Everyone in this community is fantastic with regard to the efforts and time they put in, so that needs to be recognized also.”

Blevins is being recognized for his tremendous success with the Mustangs over the last couple of years, which has included back-to-back SJHL Championships and National silver medals, as well as an SJHL Coach of the Year award and a CJHL (Canadian Junior Hockey League) Coach of the Year award.

“It’s been a little more up and down this year, but fantastic as a whole these past couple. Obviously, winning back-to-back championships, as well as being national runner-ups, the final games were a bit bittersweet, but when you really look back and realize what it took to get there, it’s pretty phenomenal. Commitment from a lot of people, especially the players, so it’s great to look back on,” Blevins added.

“This year, we probably had a bit higher expectations for where we needed to be, but our guys have been fantastic these past couple months, and I just can’t thank them enough for getting up the mountain that seemed impossible to climb. From where we were to where we got ourselves to, coming into the playoffs is quite incredible, so exceptional of them for not taking no for an answer.”

The Mel-Bex awards were handed out this past weekend; however, unfortunately, Blevins was unable to attend, as he was in North Battleford for a pair of playoff games.
