A former member of the Humboldt Broncos has committed to playing post-secondary hockey.

Defenceman Oakley McIlwain will play with the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings, coming this fall.

McIlwain played parts of three seasons in Humboldt, beginning in the 2023/24 season.

To start this year, the 20-year-old was part of the Broncos’ leadership group as an assistant captain.

The Lloydminster native played a total of 121 games with the Green and Gold, between regular season and playoffs, and amassed 56 points.

McIlwain came to Humboldt midway through the 2023/24 campaign in a trade with the Grand Prairie Storm of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL).

He was then sent to his hometown Lloydminster Bobcats (AJHL) at the deadline this season, during the Broncos’ major overhaul.

The Kings have been littered with SJHL talent these past couple of seasons, winning three of their last four league titles.

Former SJHL players on Red Deer this last year included: Ethan Farrow (goaltender, Yorkton Terriers), Nic Andrusiak (defenceman, Melville Millionaires and Melfort Mustangs), Nathan DeGraves (defenceman, Kindersley Klippers), Tyson Janzen (defenceman, Yorkton Terriers), Kevin Minnoch (defenceman, Melfort Mustangs), Tanner Sklaruk (defenceman, Yorkton Terriers), Tyson Tisdale (defenceman, Kindersley Klippers), Alex Bernauer (forward, Nipawin Hawks), Mason Bueckert (forward, La Ronge Ice Wolves and Kindersley Klippers), Carter Cormier (forward, Flin Flon Bombers), Nolan Doell (forward, La Ronge Ice Wolves and Melfort Mustangs), Cade Kennedy (forward, Yorkton Terriers, Estevan Bruins, and Humboldt Broncos), Holden Knights (forward, Melfort Mustangs and La Ronge Ice Wolves), Dawson Leroux (forward, Melfort Mustangs), Alex Mack (forward, Melfort Mustangs, Kindersley Klippers, and La Ronge Ice Wolves), Ryland McNinch (forward, Battlefords North Stars), Sean Michalewich (forward, Kindersley Klippers), Shayne Tibbles, (forward, Kindersley Klippers), Kody Willick, (forward, Nipawin Hawks).
