Carrot River creating wrestling dynasty

Carrot River continued its wrestling display throughout the month of March, picking up medals at every age group in both school and club provincials.

From March 13-14, five wrestlers from the high school went to provincials in Saskatoon where the girls’ team went on to win the provincial championship at the 3A level. Paola Beriguete came away as an individual provincial champion while Ava Edwards picked up a silver medal.

Of the 28 teams at the tournament, Carrot River ranked 26th in school size but finished in seventh in overall points.

“We’re pretty excited about the results. Our girls have only won the provincial championship one other time, that was the team in 2018, and that was our very first year in existence, so this is our second time winning the provincial championships, and also our third year winning the regional championship out of the last five,” coach Kevin Duchscherer said.

“We like to think we’re trying to build a bit of a dynasty. Our boys won the regional championships last year, but unfortunately, they just fell a bit short this time. They wrestled as well as they could, though, too.”

From there, the U9, U11, and U13 club championships were held the following weekend on March 22, with one Clark Funk taking home the bronze at the U13 level as a member of the North East Wrestling Club (NEWC). The NEWC has wrestlers from Carrot River, Nipawin, and Arborfield.

Finally, the rest of the club championships were held this past weekend in Prince Albert, and this is how local athletes faired:

• Mallory Flowerday, Senior Women – Gold
• Jacob Lefebvre, Junior Men – Silver
• Nick Silcox, Senior Men – Silver; Masters Men – Bronze
• Kevin Duchscherer, Masters Men – Silver; Senior Men – 4th
• Tony Luciano, Junior Men – Bronze; U19 Men – 5th
• Lola Hildebrand, U17 Girls – Bronze
• Savannah Harder, U19 Women – Bronze
• Elisha Silcox, U15 Girls – 4th
• McKenna Smits, U19 Women – 5th

Three of said wrestlers are coaches of the club team as well.

“I’m extremely proud of our wrestling program here since we started it in 2018. We’ve been working hard on it ever since, and we’ve had a lot of success in that time. From 2022 on, we’ve been really strong, and the sport has just really taken off here,” Duchscherer added.

“We’d like to think that, from a small town aspect, we definitely feel that we can represent the community well, our school well, and we have worked very hard to be as predominant as possible when we go to tournaments. We want people to recognize that we belong there.”

For the high school team in particular, only one of their wrestlers this year is graduating this summer, with one Grade 11 student actually injured, but coming back, so the team should be as strong, if not stronger, next season.
