Detour over Red Deer River

Drivers urged to obey signage at bridge repair site near Hudson Bay

Ahead of the Easter long weekend, the Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways is reminding motorists to follow the posted detour signs on Highway 3 over the Red Deer River near Hudson Bay.

The ministry issued the warning due to the ongoing winter bridge repair project.

“The detour uses Rural Municipality of Hudson Bay No. 394 roads to route traffic safely around the work site,” a news release stated.

The department is aiming to prevent motorists from travelling on the frozen river into the path of crews working near the bridge, and additional vehicle loading on the river ice as the weather warms up.

There has been at least one unauthorized vehicle crossing at the location, along with vehicle tracks across the river where travel is not permitted.

“I know we just got past April Fool’s Day, but safety is no joke,” Ministry spokesperson Dan Palmer told northeastNOW. “We want everyone to get home safely, so please follow the detour, and let’s all get home safely.”

The work zone is clearly marked with signage, message boards, jersey barriers, and black-and-white road closure signs, along with clearly marked detour signage.

“The project is expected to be completed by late April, depending on the weather, but that’s the current target,” Palmer said. “The project is about $400,000 in repairs to ensure the continued safe operation of that bridge for that highway.”
