Inmate dies following fight at Sask. Pen.

Apr 22, 2026 | 2:36 PM

One man is dead and several others were injured following a fight at the maximum security unit of the Saskatchewan Penitentiary yesterday.

Corrections Canada said that Horace Bear, who was serving a sentence of just under three years, has died.

His sentence started December 13, 2024.

Two other inmates were evaluated by Corrections staff and taken to an outside hospital for treatment. One returned the same day while the other man remains hospitalized.

RCMP have confirmed they are investigating the death.

“The male’s death is considered suspicious. As a result, the Saskatchewan RCMP’s Homicide Investigation Unit has taken carriage of the investigation,” they said in a news release.

No staff were injured.

The maximum security unit was locked down and operations modified for the safety of workers and inmates and to allow the RCMP and Corrections time to investigate.

The institution continues to work on a modified routine.

As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, CSC will review the circumstances. CSC policy requires that the police and the coroner be notified.
