“For a community like Nipawin, if we’re trying to show that Nipawin is growing and ready for development, the census is one of the strongest tools we have,” he said. “The more accurate the count, the stronger our position.”

When the census isn’t filled out, the population count is lower than it should be, which could mean less funding and a more difficult justification of projects or services. Seckinger said the data collected through Statistics Canada shows that small gaps can have a large impact, especially in smaller communities.

Seckinger said the census helps with planning roads and infrastructure, understanding housing needs, supporting funding applications, and working with partners like the Saskatchewan Housing Authority.

“It also helps show what our community looks like today and where it’s heading.”

The census numbers have shown consistent growth in Nipawin over the past three cycles. Nipawin’s population was 4,265 in 2011, 4,426 in 2016, and 4,570 in 2021. Seckinger said that is three to four per cent growth each cycle, and it shows stable, consistent growth that gives the Town something to build on moving forward.

Residents who don’t receive a census form can contact The Town Office.

“Don’t assume you’ve been counted,” he said. “It’s a quick fix, but it’s important to follow up so you’re included.”

Seckinger said it’s a quick form to complete and it puts Nipawin in a much stronger position for funding, planning, and future opportunities.
