Kinistino Rink receives additional funding

The Kinistino Sports Complex has undergone major renovations and continues to receive funding from a variety of sources.

The building was renamed the CLAAS Centre in April, raising $75,000. Since then, ADAMA Canada has contributed through its Stomping Grounds initiative.

Renovations included the purchase of a new ice plant and the addition of a room for the ice-resurfacer. The upgrades also led to the construction of washrooms for the nearby ball diamonds.

“We decided to add bathrooms with access from the outside for the Kinistino Minor Ball Association to use with their newly renovated ball diamond next door,” said Trevor Wilton, vice-president of the Kinistino Sports Complex board. “We thought that if we could help out with some washrooms right next door, that’d be awesome. The rink is the hub of any small town in the winter, and with this renovation and the new ball diamond, there will be activities for kids year-round.”

The total cost of the renovations is $1.3 million, with the project now in its third year.

Although the project is nearing completion, fundraising will continue until the full budget is covered.

“The town put up a portion of the funding to complete the project, because if the ice plant ever went down, that would be a major blow to our community,” Wilton said. “We still have to raise funds to repay that.”

“Kinistino is an agricultural community, and many of us are ADAMA customers, so to have a company like them give back to community projects is great.”

A $7,500 cheque was recently presented outside the complex by Jordan Wolkowski, ADAMA’s northeast Saskatchewan area business manager.

“It was really neat to see how the whole project has come together and how, through the ice plant renovation, they were also able to add washrooms for the new ball diamonds,” he said in a news release.

“Growing up on a farm, I saw firsthand how rural communities come together to support one another. I also appreciate how hard it can be for small towns to find funding to keep things like rinks going. It was a great feeling to see how ADAMA’s investment was being put to good use.”
