Father-son duo win second straight Left/Right

The Gary Brandon Left/Right golf tournament in Melfort has a repeat champion.

Father-son duo, Tyler and Carter Degelman, won the tournament for the second straight year this past weekend, doing so in convincing fashion.

Both times, the Degelmans have only needed 13 holes to come out on top.

“I think we’re planning on coming back every year and making this a tradition. I believe the record is three years in a row, so we’re definitely going to be back next year and coming for that. It’s just a really fun tournament, so hopefully, we can both make it every year,” Carter told northeastNOW.

“It’s so fun playing with my kid. I don’t really see him a lot in the winter, so to just get to watch him play and play together, and keep this father-son tradition going, has been so awesome. Honestly, win or lose, it’s a really fun tournament and a great group of guys. It’s always amazing to come up here, but I had almost 32 years of losing before this, so I’ve very much enjoyed going 2 for 2 with my son,” Tyler added.

Tyler had long played with his own dad, Bob, who still lives in Melfort, before Carter was old enough to compete.

Now, Carter plays on an NCAA team down in the States, competing in numerous collegiate tournaments, before returning for his favourite event of the summer.

“It’s obviously a totally different tournament than the ones I was playing during the winter, but you still have some really good players out at this one, and you definitely still have to play good golf to win it. Absolutely the number one tournament I look forward to in the summer,” Carter continued.

“I think in Saskatchewan, Melfort might be one of the most fun courses to play. It’s fairly short, so there are some gettable holes, but there are also some holes that make you think a little bit. I think it’s super fun, especially for match play, and it’s a course that is typically in great shape.”

Another year as champions, on a much nicer weekend than the previous, as the Degelman father-son duo hope their lucky number 13 remains for year number three, come 2027.
