BHP Financial report gives Jansen project update

Aug 18, 2026 | 10:24 AM

BHP has issued an update on the Jansen Potash Project in their year-end financial report from the year ending June 30, 2026.

The report stated that Phase 1 of the Jansen project was 84 per cent complete as of the end of June. It added that during the fiscal year, the project progressed underground and surface construction activities, including structural, mechanical, and electrical works across key facilities.

BHP completed a review of Jansen Stage 1 (JS1) earlier in the year, and cost estimates increased to $8.4 billion US, including contingencies, from a preliminary estimate of $7 billion to $7.4 billion US announced in July of 2025. According to BHP, the increase reflected “inflationary and real cost escalation pressures, design development, scope changes, and lower productivity outcomes.”

The company said they have implemented a plan to address cost and schedule risks for JS1 that has improved productivity, enhanced oversight on execution contracts, and strengthened project management.

First production at JS1 is on track for mid-calendar year 2027.

Meanwhile, Jansen Stage 2 (JS2) is now listed as 16 per cent complete as of June 30.

Total investment in that stage is now estimated to be about $6.9 billion US, including contingencies, which is a $2 billion US increase from when JS2 was approved in Oct. 2023.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Brandon Craig said Jansen is an asset “that can eventually produce around 10 per cent of global potash supply at an expected earnings margin greater than 60 per cent.”

“Our immediate priority is disciplined project execution, with tighter controls and safe delivery of first production.”

First production from JS2 is expected to be in 2031.
