Attracting agricultural technology companies to Saskatchewan

“The AGTECH ACCELERATOR plays an important role in helping entrepreneurs take innovative technologies from concept to market,” Harvey said. “The program equips founders with the networks, expertise and industry connections they need to grow successful companies while also attracting new investment and talent to Saskatchewan.”

The accelerator serves a dual purpose by supporting Saskatchewan-based agtech startups and attracting promising companies from outside the province.

Through a formal partnership with Innovate UK, the United Kingdom’s national innovation agency, AGTECH ACCELERATOR participates in Innovate UK’s Global Incubator Programme. The partnership brings at least five UK-based agtech companies to Saskatchewan in each cohort to build industry connections and explore opportunities to expand their businesses into North American markets.

Cultivator powered by Conexus director Laura Mock said Saskatchewan has an incredible opportunity to become a global destination for agriculture innovators looking to develop, test and grow their technologies.

“The AGTECH ACCELERATOR attracts founders, investors and partners from around the world because of the strength of our agriculture sector and the collaboration that exists across our ecosystem. Innovation Saskatchewan’s investment is critical to delivering this program, but equally important is how they show up as a partner opening doors, building connections and supporting the companies we bring to the Prairies,” Mock said.

Since the partnership began in 2022, 25 UK-based agtech companies have engaged with Saskatchewan through the accelerator.

The program has helped a growing number of companies achieve commercial success and attract investment. Saskatchewan-based Ground Truth Agriculture has raised more than $7 million in venture capital since participating in the accelerator. Super GeoAI has expanded its commercial reach with crop insurance providers across Canada, while AgScouter successfully launched as an independent startup.

The accelerator has also helped attract businesses and talent to Saskatchewan. British Columbia-based Lucent BioSciences has established significant manufacturing, research and development operations in the province, while Chariot Command’s founder relocated to Yorkton after building key industry and academic connections through the program.

The investment announcement was made during Startup Summit, an annual entrepreneurship and innovation event, on Sept. 9.
