Mustangs announce leadership group, excited for 2026/27 campiagn

The Melfort Mustangs’ regular season begins Friday, as the club aims to get back to championship form and build on a strong second half from the 2025/26 campaign.

Melfort finished in sixth place in the league standings during last year’s regular season, before falling in the first round of the playoffs in five games to the Battlefords North Stars.

“It’s been a very good camp and preseason; we’re really happy with our compete level, we definitely think we’re strong in all three positions, and we’re excited with all the players that we have here. Obviously, we would like to have a good start to the year, but to me, it’s not always about the wins and losses; it’s how we prepare every day and get better every day, and players are buying into that,” explained Head Coach and GM Trevor Blevins.

“I love our culture, I love where we’re at as far as our leadership group and our young players, and everyone’s doing their part to be successful here this week in practice to prepare for the start of the season. We want to have a start to the season where we’re the hardest team to play against, and I feel if you can have that kind of structure and that kind of mentality, you will be successful most nights.”

The Mustangs will begin their season at home, against their rival Nipawin Hawks, with the goal of putting last year in the rearview.

New players mixed with respected vets will drive a group that’s focused on a new year, which takes every day as its own challenge.

“This is a new year, and we’re excited for it. We want to get off on the right foot when we talk about our work ethic and our attitude and what goes on in that dressing room every day, and we’re not focused on last year. We’re focused on this year and on game number one,” Blevins added.

“I think we got a great mix of personalities; I love coming to the rink every day, and I think for us we’ve got a great mix of leadership with 20-year-olds, our young guys, and in between. I think there’s a lot of good people in our dressing room who are Melfort Mustangs for a reason because they’re going to be respectful, great in the community, and bring their best effort every night. We’re dealing with a lot of good people right now, which is exciting for us as a staff, so we’re ready to roll.”

This year’s leadership group will feature 20-year-old forward Truistin Ziola as the captain, while 20-year-old forwards Luke Mackenzie and Dru Mushumanski, along with 20-year-old defenceman Darren Hunt, serve as the alternate captains.
