Celebrating culture in Melfort.

The 2026 Culturama was held at the Kerry Vickar Centre on Saturday, part of the national Culture Days celebration of culture and heritage.

Melfort and District Museum curator Brenda Mellon told northeastNOW the event had another great year.

“We had 25 different cultural groups and organizations displaying information,” Mellon said. “Many of them had things to give away or little demonstrations for people to try, or food samples.”

The event also featured workshops and activities, along with face painting and glitter tattoos for the kids.  The CJVR Performing Arts Theatre hosted a variety of entertainment and demonstrations, from dancing to fencing. A variety of cultural food options were also available for purchase.

Mellon said Culturama has grown over the years, with seven more groups taking part in Saturday’s event.

“That was really nice to see,” she said.

Many of the groups this year also added more information and activities that allowed people to learn more about each culture.

“It’s such a celebration really of the diversity of Melfort and the surrounding area,” said Mellon. “It’s just a great chance to get together with your neighbours, and learn a little more about their culture and their backgrounds.”

A big hit at Culturama was the impromptu K-Pop dance competition at the Korean display.

Mellon thanked the cultural groups and organizations that were part of this year’s event, and the Culturama planning committee for their hard work in making it a success each year.  They will be meeting soon to discuss how Culturama went this year, and Mellon said the feedback received from participants has been very positive.

“Then we’ll start planning for next year,” she explained. “We have our list of what to do and how we can make it even bigger and better next time around.”

Anyone interested in setting up a display for next year’s Culturama, or joining the committee, can contact Brenda at the museum.
