Several areas of southern Saskatchewan are under a yellow wind warning, with gusts expected in excess of 90 km/h overnight. Lang said the southern regions will generally have the strongest wind associated with this weather system, but not as much in the way of precipitation.

“The further south you go, the more wind you get, and the further north you go, the more snow you get,” Lang said. “In between, it’s going to be sort of a mess.” 

The northeast and north-central areas, including Prince Albert, Lang said they can expect 2 to 5 cm of snow. However, that snow could melt soon after falling with the ground being warm, and temperatures are expected to hover around or slightly above zero. 

“Not looking too much in the way of accumulation [of snow].” 

Wind gusts in those areas could reach 80 to 90 km/h at times tonight through Saturday morning before they begin to subside a little. The North Battleford area can expect similar wind gusts during that time, and they are under a wind warning. 

Meadow Lake could see upwards of 8 cm of snow, with blowing snow.  

The La Ronge area is expecting around 8 to 10 cm of snow with wind gusts up to 70 km/h leading to blowing snow. Areas north of La Ronge are under a snowfall warning, and they could see 20 to 40 cm of snow with this system. Travel could be tricky in many areas of the province overnight into Saturday morning, with windy conditions and snow causing issues. 

Lang said a large push of cold air behind this system is one of the reasons it is so powerful, and that will mean much cooler weather than we’ve been seeing. Temperatures will be hovering in the low single digits for the next week or so, which is actually much closer to the normal high temperatures for this time of year. 

“We really haven’t even seen a killing frost yet, so in behind this system it’s going to be a bit of a shock,” said Lang. 

She said the cold, blustery weather can serve as a reminder to get your car, home, and yard prepared for the winter months, and to check the Highway Hotline before you start your drive.
