Quarter of the way through

Mustangs welcome Stars ahead of week long break

Oct 28, 2026 | 1:47 PM

The Melfort Mustangs will begin the second quarter of their season Wednesday, as they play host to the visiting Battlefords North Stars.

Melfort, through 14 of their 56 scheduled regular-season games so far, have a record of 9-4-1, good for first in their division and second in the SJHL.

When looking at Battlefords, they’ve been a bit on the opposite end, as they currently sit last in their division and second worst in the league, with a 2-9-1 record through 12 contests.

While the Mustangs have also already taken down the Stars, shutting them out 2-0 in North Battleford, back on Oct. 9, Stangs forward Luke Dekay knows his team still needs to bring it in hopes of getting another two points.

“We got to defend them off the rush because that’s their strong point, and just focus on being good defensively as a whole. Hopefully, won’t let them score and take it home,” Dekay told northeastNOW. “We know they’re a very skilled team and are good offensively.”

The Blue and Green have points in their last three games, most recently coming off a 3-2 victory over the Red Wings in Weyburn this past Saturday.

It was there that Dekay made his return down south to face his former team.

“It was super nice picking up the win against the old team. Felt a little weird being there, but also felt the support of the Weyburn community with me,” he added. “I also got some great advice from my teammates who have been in similar spots, telling me not to be nervous, worry about it, or get in my head. Just play my game, and we did that as a team.”

Following this evening’s contest, Melfort will have roughly a week off, as they don’t have another game scheduled until next Saturday (Nov. 7), when they host the Yorkton Terriers.

While the Mustangs’ focus is heavy on today’s game, the boys are still looking forward to a little time away.

“Just super excited for some time off with the boys,” Dekay concluded.

Puck drop Wednesday night against the North Battleford North Stars is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., with the pregame show starting at 7:15 p.m. on 105CJVR and CJVR.com
