Second-fastest woman in age group

Melfort’s Luthi blazes through Chicago marathon

A marathon runner from Melfort continues her successful race career.

Robyn Luthi finished the recent Chicago Marathon with a time of 2:52:34, a personal-best time for her on the Chicago course, and her second fastest marathon ever.

Luthi told northeastNOW she went into the run feeling a bit undertrained, but she surpassed her expectations, with the second-fastest run for women in her age group.

“There [were] 55,000 people in that race, and so I’m kind of proud of myself on that one,” Luthi said. “I was the 10th fastest woman overall – despite age groups – from Canada.”

After the race, Luthi was ranked first in Canada in her age group in the World Marathon Rankings, and fifth overall in the world.

Luthi will take a little time off before beginning training for her next marathon in London in April.  She was invited to the World Age Class Championships in Tokyo but said she had earlier committed to the London race.

“Another winter of marathon training, which every year I keep saying will never happen again, but here I am,” she joked.

Fall marathons are easier to train for, Luthi said, because you are training in summer conditions and not worried about snow or other inclement weather.

“I keep saying I’m going to be done, but I’m just not quite done yet, I guess!”

Luthi has run all eight stars of the marathon circuit, and hopes to run the ninth location should Shanghai, China be approved as an Abbott World Marathon Major. She has already been invited to the 2028 World Age Class Championships, which she hopes is in Shanghai so she can be one of the first to run all nine major courses. Luthi was one of the first 2,000 people in the world to complete the eight stars when she ran in Cape Town, South Africa.

“Once I get that ninth star, once they announce that that’s going to happen, then I think that I might look at possibly retiring at that point.”
