Stovel Park opening and Elks family fun day to go rain or shine

A day filled with activities to celebrate the completion of the Stovel Park revitalization will go ahead as planned.

Spokesperson Myrna Buckingham , told northeastNOW the Melfort Elks family fun day to commemorate the re-opening of the Stovel Ave. Park will be moved into the curling rink if it is raining.

“As much as we can make happen will be at the curling rink and if the sun is shining, we will be at the park,” Buckingham said.

The park revitalization has been underway for a couple of years now when the Melfort Elks decided that they would like to see it fixed up rather than see it deteriorate. The park was initially installed by the Elks group.

The Friends of Stovel Park group was formed to include different community groups to combine efforts to bring a fresh look to the playground on Stovel Ave. W. Those groups are the Elks, Kinsmen and Kinettes, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and Kiddie Korner Playschool.

An immense amount of work has gone into getting to the re-opening day according to Buckingham.

“This will be a day about celebrating all that has been done and how far the park has come,” she said.

The day begins with a pancake breakfast at 8 a.m., children’s entertainment begins at 10 a.m. with a scavenger hunt, dinosaur dig, snow-cones, DQ treats, cotton candy, popcorn and prizes.

A hot dog lunch with be offered at 11:30 a.m. with more activities to follow in the afternoon and the official ribbon cutting at 2 p.m.

“Depending on the weather, emergency services will have vehicles to check out,” Buckingham said.

A pickleball tournament will run from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

“The pickleball courts were just finished up yesterday and last night we had the first people there playing and they said it was great,” Buckingham said.

Ole McDales farm will be on hand in the afternoon and live music is set for 3:30 p.m. The build your own burger supper begins at 5 p.m. and the draw for $10,000 will be made at 8 p.m.

“We are excited and looking forward to it and we are not going to let the weather dampen our spirits,” Buckingham said.
