NEOSS holds annual team building day in Melfort

Jul 4, 2019 | 12:40 PM

You may have noticed some funky outfits and decorated vehicles around Melfort on Wednesday, July 3. No, it wasn’t a parade — it was Northeast Outreach and Support Services’ (NEOSS) second annual Team Building Day.

The staff was split into teams and got into funky costumes and decorated vehicles to do a scavenger hunt of sorts. Teams started with a nail file and needed to go around Melfort ‘trading up’ their items. At the end, teams had a variety of larger and more valuable items that NEOSS will now use in various capacities. Some uses could be in the shelter itself, prizes for different events, or donations as well. Executive Director Louise Schweitzer said it was great for the staff to get out in the manner they did.

“We want to say a great ‘thank you’ to our community. They were amazing and supportive,” Schweitzer told northeastNOW. “Unbelievable things were traded for our team to do some building and some positive stuff and do some positive awareness out in the community.”

Schweitzer added because of the nature of their job, days like these are needed for the overall well-being of the staff.

“Our staff deals with a lot of vicarious trauma, and trauma with the individuals that we deal with every day. So it’s very important that they get to come together as a team and laugh and play and have some fun as well,” she said.

After their ‘trade up’ in the afternoon, the staff got together at the NEOSS facility and participated in an obstacle course. Schweitzer said it was a great way for them to come back together as a team.

“They were all together and cheering each other on,” Schweitzer said. “And just laughing, lots and lots of laughing. Then we enjoyed a meal together before everybody got some prizes and got to go home on a positive note.”

Schweitzer went on to say that having days where they can get together and laugh and play is a huge part of their mental health and well-being.

NEOSS helps victims of interpersonal violence in the community and is a non-profit charity.
