Northeast Christian Fellowship continuing renovations of former Melfort Journal building

The Northeast Christian Fellowship church will continue renovations of the former Melfort Journal building throughout the summer and potentially beyond.

Other than some stoppage due to pulling metal out of the walls in early July, Pastor Paul Dubois said traffic on Main Street should flow through smoothly during renovations.

“That was a rare case,” Dubois told northeastNOW. “I don’t think there will be much that we’re going to be stopping traffic for in the future.”

Northeast Christian Fellowship received approval from Melfort council in August 2018 to purchase and use the former Melfort Journal building as a place of worship. They possessed the building in October of that year, began work on the interior in December, and started the full rebuild in January 2019.

“We didn’t start until we had our permits in place,” Dubois said. “It’s been an ongoing process because there are lots of codes we have to comply to. We had a three-week stoppage from the code people just because of some mechanical drawings they wanted. That kind of put us behind schedule a little bit, but we’re moving forward again.”

All of the church’s offices – along with Sunday schools, youth and young adult ministries, and Bible College Training Centre – are expected to move into the renovated building.

Dubois said there’s no timeline for when renovations will be completed, as most of the labour is done voluntarily, but he expects to hold an open house for the community once they’re complete.
