Strong winds take down two street light standards in Watrous

Two steel street light standards went down in Watrous this morning as a result of strong winds gusts.

Power was out for the 400 block of Main Street as SaskPower crews responded to restore service according to Town Administrator Orrin Redden.

“After they went down, power was shut off for a good chunk of town for about an hour while they dealt with the carnage. But it has all been restored with the exception of a couple of street lights,” Redden said.

The town went unscathed during yesterday’s storm activity around the province but then strong winds pulled in this morning.

“It was awfully windy but I’m actually not sure what the wind got up to,” Redden said.

According to data from Environment Canada, wind gusts were recorded up to 67 km/h around 10 a.m.

Other than some slight traffic delays while town crews cleaned up the area, Redden said the incident didn’t make too many negative impacts.

“There may been some very slight property damage perhaps to a vehicle or something but I’m not aware of any significant damage or injuries or anything of that nature,” Redden said.

More storms are in the forecast for this afternoon for many parts of the province.

“Hopefully it’s just rain and nothing else crazy,” Redden said.
