Melfort Library puts a wrap on summer reading program

Over 100 young readers were able to read over 4,500 books over the course of the summer reading program at the Melfort Public Library.

A wrap-up party was held on Wednesday afternoon to celebrate those who participated.

Head Librarian Penny Markland said they had a very busy summer.

“That is what we like because that is the whole point,” she said.

Those who attended the wrap-up party were able to play bingo for prizes and each child went home with one.

A long list of sponsors is what makes the continued programming at the library a possibility.

“We always apply for a grant through the community initiatives fund and they support us with money that we put towards the snacks, the prices or staff wages,” Markland said. “Without all of that we couldn’t do as much as we do.”

Markland said they are seeing success with their youngest book lovers over the course of the entire year as well.

“We launched the 1,000 books before kindergarten program last September,” Markland said. “We have 131 kids and have about 20 of them finished the 1,000 books already.”

Library Week is coming up on October 21 to the 26 and Markland said they will have a celebration of that program.

“You can look to come to the library that week to try out some virtual reality stuff and other exciting things,” she said.

The Melfort Library celebrated its 90th anniversary last August where they had a draw for anyone that signed up which Markland said helped to boost their numbers significantly.
