We Scare Hunger campaign kicks off

Oct 3, 2019 | 11:56 AM

The Melody Motors’ “We Scare Hunger’ campaign is now underway in Melfort.

Schools around the community are once again tackling hunger this month by setting up collection boxes for non-perishable food items.

At the end of the month, the items collected are then donated to the local food bank.

Brunswick School Principal, Rodney White said the campaign is important for the school and its students.

“We have families in our school that benefit from the food bank and we know that most certainly around Melfort, there are families that benefit,” White said. “We want to do our part to show respect and caring for others.”

Last year’s campaign brought in over 10,000 pounds of food for local food banks with 3,000 pounds being donated to the Melfort bank.

Melody Motors has run the campaign for over five years now, making significant donations to the communities of Nipawin, Tisdale as well as Melfort with help from schools and organizations.

The Maude Burke School staff announced that they are collecting donations for the campaign and students are encouraged to take the challenge to bring a different item each day.

Star City, Tisdale Middle and Secodary School, Porcupine Plain, Arborfield, Carrot River, White Fox, and Choiceland were all visited by Melody Motors owner Ken Madraga and his mother, Evelyn for presentations last week on the campaign.

Barrels were also dropped off at the L.P. Miller and Wagner school in Nipawin, who were the winners of the most pounds of food collected per student challenge trophy.

“Any amount helps and we know that the food bank could use support on an ongoing basis and we try to target this at least twice a year to help them out,” White said.

More food drives will continue onward in the lead up to Christmas.

Food collection bins are also set up at Melody Motors this month.

Melody is offering treats for kids who bring a non-perishable food item into the Friday night Melfort Mustangs game against the Humboldt Broncos. Kids will also have their names entered into a draw to go on the ice with the Mustangs for a puck shoot at intermission.
