A Tearful Goodbye

“I didn’t see any pictures of him without him smiling,” says friend planning special tribute

Friends and family of the late “Buck” Borson will gather Friday night at the Candle Lake Curling Club to share their favourite memories of the man who was small in stature, but big in heart.

The “celebration of life” event was organized by Rick Valcourt, one of Borson’s closest friends. Valcourt said he felt compelled to do something.

“I think people really needed some kind of closure or some kind of get together, just to talk about it and really appreciate Buck for who he was,” he said.

Borson, 55, was found dead Sept. 23 at his Candle Lake apartment, which was located at the Fisher Creek Trading Post where he worked. Valcourt said the tribute night will include an open mic as well as a slide show.

“I didnt see any pictures of him without him smiling so every picture he’s very happy, dancing, and he had a big, big heart,” he said.

Valcourt, like many in the community, are now waiting for answers regarding how Borson died. RCMP have yet to lay charges and the cause of death is still being determined by the provincial coroner. Mayor Borden Wasyluk acknowledged there has been a lot of rumours floating around the community regarding what happened, but encouraged people to be patient before rushing to judgment.

“I think I would encourage people to get the facts straight first,” he said.

Wasyluk said Borson was very well liked, and added news of the death had hit the community hard. Wasyluk recalled seeing Borson every morning when he went downtown for coffee or visited the Fisher Creek Trading Post.

“He was not a gigantic individual that was a threat to anybody,” Wasyluk said. “He was well liked in his current occupation where he was and the previous one.”
