Carrot River Minor Hockey Auction looking to keep costs low for young players

Oct 28, 2019 | 3:05 PM

The Carrot River Minor Hockey Auction takes place on Saturday, Oct. 28 at the Carrot River Arena.

The auction started in the 1970’s and helps raise funds to keep minor hockey costs as low as possible for those playing in town.

Carrot River Minor Hockey President Dan Pihowich said they tend to raise between $30,000 and $35,000 every year, which allows each kid to save around $300 a year.

“Hockey is not cheap anymore and a lot of families, if we had to add $300 per kid, they might not be playing hockey,” he said.

There are nearly 200 items in the live auction ranging from fertilizer to various gift certificates, electronics, and sport memorabilia like signed jerseys.

“We’ve also kind of got a local celebrity in Carrot River,” Pihowich said. “Jayden Wiens, a local kid, he played with the Tisdale Trojans last year and now he’s playing with the Saskatoon Blades, so there’s an autographed Jayden Wiens t-shirt.”

Meanwhile, new this year to the auction is a silent auction portion that begins at 2:30 p.m.

Hockey games will be played throughout the afternoon and into the evening. The PeeWee Carrot River Loggers will play at 3 p.m., followed by the Bantam team at 6 p.m., then the Midgets at 8:15 p.m.

Things get underway for the live auction at 7 p.m. on 105CJVR and run until midnight. There will be updates during that time on Saskatchewan’s New Beach Radio.
