Rotary Club raises funds for ShelterBox Canada while recognizing area emergency services

The Rotary Club of Melfort brought emergency services members in the region together over the weekend to recognize their work.

The appreciation dinner saw representatives from the Melfort’s fire department, paramedic service, RCMP, and STARS Air ambulance, along with other emergency services in the area.

Fire Chief Jason Everitt said the evening meant a lot to him and the members of the fire department.

“We are never in it for accolades and actually most of us were uncomfortable with that type of recognition but it was great to have all of our partners in one room,” Everitt said.

This was the first event of its type to be held in Melfort and Everitt hopes to see it continue.

“I think it is a great opportunity for the community to get together and enjoy each others company,” Everitt said.

STARS Air Ambulance provided a presentation on the service they provide, which included a personal story of a beneficiary of the STARS service.

“It really brought all of it together and shows the impact that these teams have and how effective they can be when they work together,” Everitt said, adding the story included details on the follow-up with rehab along with his time spent in hospital after suffering an injury.

The event was used for the Rotary Club to raise funds for ShelterBox Canada.

Keynote speakers on the evening included ShelterBox’s Ron and Clare Noseworthy, who spoke about the importance the product.

A shelterbox is part of the Rotary mission to help where disasters happen. Shelterbox Canada goes in and provides shelter, food, and clothing to those in need.
