Mark of Excellence

Exceptional businesses and people in the spotlight at annual awards

Mar 21, 2019 | 8:05 AM

The 20th Annual Mark of Excellence Awards have wrapped up in Humboldt.

The Humboldt and District Chamber of Commerce handed out their awards on Wednesday evening at Jubilee Hall. One of the first awards of the night was the Junior Citizen of the Year Award. That was given to Nathan Tremblay this year. Tremblay’s community involvement spreads all over the City of Humboldt, whether it be in school or out of school, and spanning from helping at the Food Bank to organizing a fundraiser for the Humboldt Broncos last year.

Tremblay said he was surprised when he found out that he had won the award.

“I never really thought that I would be up there with everybody else and to think that somebody out there thinks that I am deserving, that I kind of embody what the award is about, it’s humbling,” he said.

Tremblay said in his speech that his mom got him into volunteering, but the idea blossomed and he wanted to do more.

“I think if I put lots in, then maybe it will encourage others to kind of get out of their comfort zone, and try to volunteer and just be more positive towards each other in any way they can.” Tremblay told northeastNOW.

Tremblay said that when he moves on to University next, he wants to continue volunteering, specifically in university government.

“If me doing as much stuff possible makes someone do just one thing, I think that’s a success.” -Nathan Tremblay

The Citizen of the Year Award at the event was a bit different this year. It was awarded to the whole community of Humboldt for the way the community came together after last April’s Broncos bus crash. A special mention was given to the former president of the team, Kevin Garinger, who was a big voice for the team and the city after the crash. He was in attendance to receive the award.

Multiple businesses were given awards at the event as well. The Growth and Expansion Award had five nominees and was awarded to Tremblay Electric. Co-Owners Adam and Stacey Tremblay were in attendance to receive the award, and Stacey said they went through some adversity to grow the way they did.

“It’s been a tough couple of years in our industry,” she said. “But, we just have such a great group and we’re really excited to do business with them. They’re ready to grow and we’re ready to grow,” she said.

Adam said they set some lofty goals this year, but they knew they could expand.

“I think our goal is always to be to growing,” He said. “This last year we set some bigger growth targets just because of the team we had and the comfort we had in the people working with us.”

Meanwhile, the Service Award had a shared winner for the first time. Clip, Snip, Cozy shared the award this year with Muenster Powder Coating and Design.

Clip, Snip, Cozy is a mobile dog groomer in Humboldt that travels 100 km out the city to serve the surrounding area. Owner Jennifer Koffing said it was amazing to win an award.

“It means a lot actually,” Koffing said. “This is my first year being mobile, so to even just win an award is huge. And as a Service Award, it just means a lot that people appreciate the little things you do.”

Koffing added that the reason she is a mobile business is to give pets and their owners ease because some pets do not travel well.

The process for choosing the winners goes from nominations from citizens, then the Chamber sends them to a sister Chamber organization, where they then vote on winners based on the nominations.
