Three Trojans honoured as SMAAAHL announces award winners

The Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League has handed out their yearly awards, and a few Tisdale Trojans are taking home some hardware.

One of the big winners this year is St. Brieux native, Tanner Martin. The now 18-year-old goalie, in his last year of AAA eligibility took home the League Goaltender Award, the Top Goalie Award, and the Goalie MVP Award. Martin had a 24-8 record on the season, a 1.68 goals against average, a .93 save percentage, and eight shutouts. All of those stats were tops in the SMAAAHL. Trojans Head Coach Darrell Mann said Martin’s value to the team is felt on and off the ice.

“Tanner, not just a great goaltender, but a great leader for our hockey club,” Mann told northeastNOW. “He definitely led by example all year. This time off for him is going to be huge, a little banged up in the playoffs, but a little rest and relaxation will get him back to where he was. Just so happy for him to be able to walk away with three huge goaltending awards from our league.”

Martin also found himself on the league’s First All-Star Team, where he was joined by fellow Trojans, defenceman Landon Kosior, and forward Cade Hayes.

Kosior was second on the team in scoring, and led all defenceman in the SMAAAHL with nine goals and 43 assists in just 44 games. That was good for twelfth in the league in overall scoring, and the second most assists. Mann said there was more than meets the eye with the 16-year-old.

“For us, he was probably the guy we couldn’t play without,” Mann said. “Just so valuable to our hockey club. You know, the points that he put up, but it’s his defensive game, and his penalty killing, and the matching up against other teams top lines that make him such a special player for our hockey club.”

As for Hayes, he led the Trojans in scoring with 23 goals and 35 assists, in 43 games. That put him in sixth in overall scoring. Mann said Hayes was the offensive stick that stirred the drink offensively.

“Offensive guy, put up some good numbers for our hockey club,” Mann said. “Really good shot, great on the powerplay, and a guy that battled through some injuries here. Now this time off will give him an opportunity to get healthy too and we’re just really proud of these three young men and the great job they’ve done representing the Tisdale Trojans all year long.”

The big winner of the rest of the league awards was 15-year-old Cole Sillinger who played for the Regina Pat Canadians this year. Sillinger led the league in scoring with 76 points in 39 games, and received a total of five awards, including the league’s Top Scorer. Sillinger’s was named the league MVP, top forward, rookie of the year, and was also named to the all-star team.

The Tisdale Trojans now have some time off before they host the Telus Cup West Regionals that get underway on April 4 and run until April 7.
