Mustangs fall to Millionaires after six day break

Nov 7, 2019 | 9:06 AM

After a six day break, the Melfort Mustangs fell in their most recent Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) contest on Wednesday.

The Melville Millionaires came into the Northern Lights Palace and took a 4-3 decision. Mustang defenceman Alex Rondeau said the lengthy break didn’t factor into the loss.

“I don’t like pointing out excuses and stuff,” he said. “I just think we didn’t put the effort in tonight.”

Rondeau opened the scoring for the Mustangs, just over four minutes into the first period as his wrist shot from the blue line found it’s way past Millionaires netminder Ethan Lahmon. Melville responded late in the period as Luke Spadafora scored with just under five minutes to go, and then again with just over a minute to play in the frame to give Melville a 2-1 lead.

Ben Tkachuk tied things for Melfort early in the second as the 2002-born forward fired a shot by Lahmon after a turnover in front. Jonathon Krahn got the lead back for the Millionaires 14 minutes into the period to make it 3-2 after two.

Once again in the third period, the Mustangs tied it up early as Seth McCulloch notched his first career SJHL goal on a nice sharp angle shot. Jack Verstraete scored almost 11 minutes later for Melville to give them the lead back that they would hold on to. Melfort had pressure but just couldn’t get a puck past Lahmon even while outshooting Melville 39-22 in the contest. Rondeau said the adjustment is simple.

“We just got to play our game like we do usually,” Rondeau told northeastNOW. “We just have to work harder than the other team, that’s what we usually do and we didn’t do it tonight, but we will do it Friday.”

That contest on Friday is against the league leading Battlefords North Stars at the Northern Lights Palace.
