Co-op in Wynyard donates for naming rights of new recreation complex

The new recreation complex in Wynyard that is currently being constructed now has an official name.

The new facility will be called Co-operative Place for a period of 20 years. This comes after the Wynyard Co-op decided to donate $400,000 to the project. Wynyard Chief Administrative Oficer, Jason Chorneyko said the naming rights was a way to bring in some larger donations.

“When we were first talking about it, and started fundraising and started construction we were talking about ways that we could increase the donation to the areana complex, and naming rights was one of them,” he said.

Chorneyko said the donation is very welcome to the project.

“Every dollar that we can raise is just an extra dollar that does not have to come from the tax roll or from borrowing,” he said. “So, on a $10 million project, $400,000 is a significant amount of money that is going towards the construction.”

That donation now brings the committed funds to about $2 million dollars from fundraising, and Chorneyko said they have collected about $1.5 million of that.

The donation also brings a partnership to the project where the Town of Wynyard will buy their materials, and supplies from the Co-op.

Construction should be finished this summer.

“As I like to say, it’s on schedule-ish,” Chorneyko said. “We had a construction meeting a couple of weeks ago, and they’re a little bit behind but not significantly, only a couple of weeks.”

Chorneyko said the project should be ready to go in the middle of June, meaning it will be ready for use during the next skating season.

The facility will also house the clubhouse for the golf course, but they will not occupy the facility until the 2020 golf season.
