Mustangs fall to Bruins in game three of semifinals

Apr 3, 2019 | 11:36 AM

The Melfort Mustangs allowed the first goal once again in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) Playoffs, but couldn’t come back this time.

The Mustangs fell 3-2 to the Estevan Bruins in game three of their semifinal series on Tuesday, April 2 in Estevan.

In the first period, the Mustangs had a few chances, but they gave up the first goal as Turner Ripplinger capitalized on a turnover for a shorthanded marker. However, the Mustangs responded just 27 seconds later as Zach Anderson tied things up on the same powerplay. Estevan responded late in the period to get the lead back as Tanner Manz scored with less than five minutes to play to give the Bruins the lead heading to the intermission.

Period number two saw a couple of Mustang chances including a shorthanded look from Tyson Meyers that hit the post, and a point blank wrist shot from Kenzie Arnold that rung iron too. The Bruins got the first goal of the period just passed the halfway point as Tristyn DeRoose made it 3-1. That chased Mustang netminder Noah Giesbrecht who stopped 19 of 22 shots to that point. Melfort responded late in the frame as Colin Schmidt jumped on a turnover and beat Bruin netminder Grant Boldt to bring Melfort back to within one.

No team was able to score in the third, but the Mustangs did have a ton of fight, but just could not seem to get one by Boldt. Mustangs Head Coach Trevor Blevins said they need to be a bit harder in all areas.

“I thought we deserved the result we got actually to be honest,” Blevins said. “Yeah, we started OK. It was just a matter of that we gave up to many opportunities in front of our net. Then on the other end of it, we couldn’t generate much offence in the offensive zone in the hard areas.”

The Mustangs were outshot 36-19 in the hockey game, but Blevins said that was uncharacteristic of the group. He also added if they play the way they did in the third period, things will be different.

The series now sits at 2-1 in favour of Melfort, with game four back in Estevan on Wednesday, April 3.
