Gerald Bulmer

With broken hearts we announce the death of our beloved dad Jerry. He was on the golf course with the old guys and shot 78 on August 29, was hospitalized September 4 and passed away September 24. As he lived his life, he faced the end with dignity, integrity and selflessness.
Jerry was born June 5, 1938 to Charles and Doris Bulmer. He spent his early years in several towns across the prairies, settling in Melfort in the late fifties, where he resided until his death. Jerry married his high school sweetheart Marilyn Peterson on November 8, 1958. They were blessed with 3 children, Rod, Bobbie and Karen. Jerry started his professional career as a teacher, teaching grades 1-8 at the Stony Creek School. While teaching, he took his accounting degree by correspondence from Queens University, graduating with his CGA designation in 1963. Jerry worked with his father in law Walter Peterson until Walter’s death in 1971. Jerry continued to work at the family firm until his passing. He kept saying “just one more year”. His colleagues and clients were like family to him. He was a kind and generous employer, with several employees staying with Bulmer and Co for over 25 years. Jerry was very proud to work alongside his son Rod for nearly 30 years, the third generation in the family business.
Jerry loved all sports, playing, watching, coaching and sideline refereeing! We have so many wonderful memories watching him play fastball, hitting home runs in every ball park in the province. The 222’s held a special place in his heart. He enjoyed watching the World Fastball Championships this past summer, driving to PA with his former teammates. Following fastball, Jerry took up golf. His favorite way to spend the summer, and later the winters in Florida was on the golf course with his family and friends. Each of his grandsons have cherished memories of the “lessons” Grandpa gave them on the golf course! Jerry loved to hunt ducks and geese. He would say there was nothing more beautiful than watching a flock of geese fly in over a wheat field on an early prairie morning. He had friends from all over North America that would come for the hunts, and for Jerry’s incredible hospitality.
Above all else, Jerry’s family meant everything to him. The loving, kind, funny and generous parent that he was, increased exponentially when the grandkids came along! Jerry’s grandchildren were his pride and joy, and the light of his life. He and Marilyn never missed a birthday, Christmas, hockey or soccer game, golf tournament, graduation or special moment. They all loved the Jerry Bulmer method of grand parenting…”whatever they want, they get”!! Grandpa was always there for all of them, giving love, support and advice. His generosity and hospitality to his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and friends was legendary.
Jerry and Marilyn’s lives were forever changed with the tragic death of their son Rod in 2010. They grieved with courage and grace, filled with gratitude for the support of their family, friends and community.
Jerry is survived by his daughters Bobbie (Michael) Dunphy, Karen (Kent) Hegglin, his grandchildren Torrie (Ryan) Silverthorn, Troy Bulmer, Mike (Lisa), Shaun (Laural), Sam and Bryn Dunphy, Eric, Paul (Cheryl), Jordan (Tegan) and Sarah Hegglin, and his great grandchildren Fielding, Leila, Jude, Ben, Aubrey, Ella Rose, Wren Marilyn and Leo Gerald; and sisters Kay (Charlie) and Diane (Carl).
Jerry was predeceased by his beloved wife Marilyn in 2017, grandson Brett and son Rod.
