It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the peace-filled passing of Joseph Michel LeGatt on July 29, 2018.
He will be lovingly remembered by his children: the Most Reverend Albert LeGatt, Arthur (Cara) LeGatt, Lucille (Barry) Matisz, Irène (Tom Waiser) LeGatt, Valérie (Randy) Stone; his grandchildren: Jeannine, Rachelle and Brett (Jessica) Matisz; Alicia and Jeremy Stone; Nathan and Danielle LeGatt, Dave (Emella) Waiser (Saeid, Greysen), Chris (Ashley) Waiser (Nevaeh, Peyton), Amanda Waiser (Anna). He is survived by his two sisters: Geneviève Boulanger and Marguerite Senko; sisters-in-law: Grace LeGatt and Jeanne Creurer, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was pre-deceased by his wife, Emma (Creurer); his children: Marcel and Lorette; parents: Athanase and Marie (Gueguen); brothers: Claude, Pierre, Frank, a twin at birth; sisters: Yvonne, Anna, Jeanne, beloved brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Dad was born on July 11, 1919 on the family homestead. He attended school in Pathlow where he developed a love of poetry, which he would later share with his children and grandchildren. In his youth, he helped on the family farm.
He entered the army and served on coastal defence on Vancouver Island during WWII. He returned home after the war and worked at a series of jobs. He married Emma Creurer on July 15, 1952 and they established their family farm near Pathlow where they raised their family. They worked hard at their mixed-farming operation, with Dad still actively farming well into his ‘80s. After Emma’s death in 1988, Dad spent winters in Saskatoon, returning to his farm each spring. Eventually, he permanently moved to Saskatoon, living with family.
Dad enjoyed curling, fishing, card games, socializing, golfing, hunting and traveling, making several trips back to the home of his ancestors in Brittany, France. Perhaps most of all, he enjoyed a good game of crib with his grandchildren and his naptimes! He was involved with the Knights of Columbus, becoming a District Deputy and joining the 4th Degree. He served on the RM of Flett’s Springs Council and the Conservation and Development Board. He was a faithful member of the St. Brieux Roman Catholic Parish. At the time of his passing, Dad was living at Veterans’ Village, Sherbrooke Community Center.
The family asks for prayers for Joseph
as we entrust him into God’s eternal love.
