Gordon Robert McKeith was born on May 4th, 1931 in the farm home of his parents, Robert and Ruby McKeith, near Hazenmore, Saskatchewan. He was a few hours younger than his twin brother Grant and grew up with sister Joyce and big brother Ronald. The dry years of the thirties sent the family northeast in a 1926 Model T to Ridgedale in 1937. After Gordon and Grant graduated in 1951, they moved to Bjorkdale where the twins made their farm home with their parents one mile south and started to farm. Gordon met Margaret Wright soon after she came to be the principal of Bjorkdale School. They married in 1963 and a year later built their home across the highway from Bjorkdale. For the next 54 years farming was the center of their life. They joyfully welcomed into their life Allan Wesley in 1968, Owen Robert in 1970 and Mary Ruth in 1973.
Gordon worked hard on the farm breaking land, growing crops, and raising cattle and pigs. He made time over the years to be on the Boards of the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, the Bjorkdale Co-op and (before Margaret arrived) Bjorkdale School. He was a charter member and for many years the treasurer of the Bjorkdale and District Lions Club and spent many hours working on their projects. Gordon was very proud to bring together the McKeith family for a reunion in the summer of 2015. It was a special time for everyone.
Gordon loved his family. Allan, Owen and Mary have amazing memories of bedtime stories, sitting on Dad’s knee on tractors, farm equipment, trucks changing gears and eventually learning to drive. He taught them to understand responsibility by caring for chickens, cows, pigs, dogs and horses, helping to put crops in the spring and harvesting in the fall and thinking about safety first and doing a job right. He absolutely loved children around him – many memories of his smiling children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends of the family. His sense of humour brought laughter and joy to young and old.
Following Grant’s death in 1990 and the last of their children leaving home Gordon and Margaret ventured out on bus tours in the United States and Canada, then more distant excursions to Australia/NZ, Spain, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Morocco and Great Britain. Then they became snowbirds travelling to Phoenix and Yuma for part of the winter months. Around the time of their July 27th wedding anniversary they usually escaped for shorter summer trips to all corners of Saskatchewan – often stopping at museums on the way.
Gordon will be deeply missed by his family, friends and community.
