Doreen Edna McLay
Mom passed from this life in Saskatoon City Hospital at the age of 90 following a brief illness.
Mom was born in Tisdale to Tom and Edna Sparrow, raised in Tisdale where she met and married our dad, Robert Allan McLay. Mom enjoyed married life as a homemaker. She was a wonderful cook and will be long remembered for her Eggless, Milkless, Butterless Cake, her Square Saskatoon Pies, and her bottomless cookie jar! When the boys were gone from home, she became a popular member of the canteen staff at various golf and curling clubs. Mom was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion.
With Dad’s career as a CNR Station Agent, Mom and Dad had many “Whistle Stops” along the way. They lived in several other Saskatchewan locations after Tisdale, such as St Walburg, Somme, Carragana, and Vonda with a two year stint in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The last Whistle Stop was Saskatoon where they lived out their remaining years.
Dad purchased a cabin at Lake Kipabiskau in 1959 and the family spent every summer there making great friends and memories, so much so that Barrie, Brian and Tom and families continue on the tradition, each now enjoying their own cabins and family time at Kip.
After Dad retired in 1982, they spent most of their winters in Palm Springs where they acquired many more special friends. They enjoyed trips to England, Scotland and Hawaii, and attended Ryan & Kerilee’s wedding in Puerto Vallarta. They enjoyed several cruises with their “winter friends”. They loved their winters away, and could hardly wait to get there! All three of our families were treated to a trip to Disneyland with Mom and Dad during their California years.
Mom always enjoyed a good “chin wag” and made time for family and friends. You only needed to walk into a room full of people to know Doreen was amongst them. Her infectious laugh was always a giveaway! Mom and Dad loved dancing, in particular square dancing in the early years. They made a handsome couple on the dance floor. Mom and Dad enjoyed 60 wonderful years of marriage.
Mom is survived by her loving sons, Barrie (Brenda), Brian (Molly) and Tom (Lorrie), her 5 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren: Todd (Deanna) McLay, Blake, Devan, & Marek; (Jessi LaCoste) & Axel McLay; Clark McLay; Ryan (Kerilee) McLay, Jayden & Brooklyn; Lisa (Justin) Shauf, Abigail, Corbin, Ty and Indiana; Sheena (Cory) Hubelit, Keegan and Alina. She is also survived by her brother Douglas (Lynne) Sparrow, nephews Troy (Liberty) Sparrow, Chad Sparrow(Julie Luu) and their families. There are numerous other relatives and many special friends in addition to those named.
Mom was predeceased by our dad, Robert (Bob), in 2009, her parents Tom and Edna Sparrow, Inlaws Ruth (Ed) Armstrong, her brother Ronald Sparrow, step-brother Emery (Betty) Sparrow and her grandson Bradley McLay
She is now resting in the arms of Jesus, alongside her beloved Bob
