Melfort Business Revitalization Committee organizing events, changes name

Nov 14, 2019 | 11:49 AM

The Melfort Business Revitalization Committee (MBRC) continues to develop its strategy for the city’s business community going forward.

The committee held a meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 14, and among the decisions made that evening was a name change.

The MBRC will now be known as the Melfort Trade Alliance.

“It says who we are going to be, and what we’re planning on doing,” treasurer Tara Muntain said.

Muntain told northeastNOW the Melfort Trade Alliance wants to help unify businesses, and they want to support and grow business in the city. The goals the organization wants to accomplish have now been split into committees, and Muntain said they have worked out the structure as to how the Melfort Trade Alliance will realize those goals.

The promotional committee has already planned three events over the coming months.

Celebrate the Sights, Sounds, and Smells of Christmas

That event will take place Saturday, Nov. 30, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

“It’s a roving kickoff to the Christmas season, moving from the Historic Post Office down to the Melfort Mall, to City Hall, and then to Memorial Gardens,” Muntain said.

There will be a petting zoo in front of the Historic Post Office, and inside the building there will be entertainment and kids’ activities. The wagon ride pick-up point will be behind the Historic Post Office, and those rides will take you down to the Melfort Mall.

Prairie North Co-op will have a warm-up snack area, and Muntain said that will also give people an opportunity to see what deals mall merchants have available on the day following Black Friday.

The wagon will then head from the mall to city hall, and a retail open house will be held in the former Northeast Source for Sports building. Muntain said Golden Grain Bakery will be on hand with cookies and refreshments available.

The Seniors Hall across the street will be holding a come-and-go Christmas bingo that day.

The wagon rides will return to the Historic Post Office, and Crokicurl will be taking place at Memorial Gardens downtown, with cookies and cider provided by TJ’s Pizza. The Melfort United Church Choir will be there singing Christmas carols.

From Us to You Promotion

Muntain said 12 businesses throughout the community are donating two $25 gift cards. When you purchase something from one of the participating businesses you will get a ‘passport’ sticker, and when you collect four stickers you are entered to win all of the gift cards. One of the baskets is for you, and the other is for you to give someone to pay it forward, Muntain said.

The promotion will run from Dec. 1 until Dec. 12, with the draw for the baskets taking place Dec. 13.

Christmas Business Social

This come-and-go event will be held at the Melfort Legion lounge Dec. 4 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The social is a way to get together, relax and unwind, and celebrate a bit of Christmas cheer, according to Muntain.

She said it’s also an excellent way to learn about what the Melfort Trade Alliance is all about, and is an opportunity to ask board members any questions or bring up concerns.
