Mustangs acquire pair of veteran forwards, trade Hobson to Klippers

The Melfort Mustangs made a big splash in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) on Monday.

Melfort has acquired 1999-born forwards Kyle Bosch and Austin Nault from the Kindersley Klippers. In exchange, the Mustangs send 1999-born defenceman Jake Hobson, 2001-born defenceman Sam Witt, and the rights to 2002-born forward Davin Griffin to Kindersley, as well as futures.

Mustangs Head Coach and General Manager Trevor Blevins said the trade balances them out.

“We were looking for some offence I think to shore up our forward group,” he said. “We’re really quite happy with our defence.”

Austin Nault, originally from Winnipeg, MB has spent his whole Junior A career withe Kindersley. He’s tallied 40 goals and 39 assists in 120 regular season games. He’s also played in nine playoff games with the Klippers, scoring twice and adding an assist. All three of those points came in last season’s first round loss to Melfort. In 19 games this season, Nault has 18 points, but recently hurt his wrist and won’t be in a Mustang uniform until likely mid-January according to Blevins.

The other forward coming to Melfort is Kyle Bosch, a Kindersley native who was in his fourth season with Kindersley. He’s scored 39 times and added 62 assists for 101 points in 194 games. He also has five points in 12 career playoff games. All five points came in that five game series against Melfort last year. This season, Bosch has seven goals and 17 assists for 24 points in 27 games for the Klippers who currently sit ninth in the SJHL standings.

Blevins said both players play good 200 ft. games, and are tough to play against.

“I remember them throughout last year’s playoffs, even though it was a [five] game series” Blevins told northeastNOW. “They were hard to play against and they bring a dynamic to our team that we need.”

The biggest fish heading to Kindersley would be Jake Hobson, a former Western Hockey League (WHL) defenceman who came to Melfort early last season from the Whitecourt Wolverines. He had 35 points in 52 games last regular season and then added five goals and five assists in last year’s playoffs as the Mustangs made it to the SJHL Finals. This season, in 15 games, Hobson has 15 points. He’s missed a handful of games due to a shoulder injury as well.

Sam Witt is another blueliner heading to Kindersley in the trade. The Calgary product came to Melfort about a week ago from Canmore in the Alberta Junior Hockey League. He did not suit up for Melfort.

Davin Griffin is the youngest player in the deal and made the Mustangs out of camp this season but quickly made his way to Prince George in the WHL after the Prince Albert Raiders traded his rights there. He has played in 13 games with Prince George and has yet to get on the scoresheet.

The trade also leaves the Mustangs with six defencemen at the current time. Blevins said a move is likely to be coming, but they want to make sure they make the right decision, so there’s no rush.

“We’re excited for our six guys that we have right now,” Blevins said. “And I’m pretty sure they’re very capable to do the job.”

Melfort is back in game action on Friday, Nov. 29 at home as they welcome the La Ronge Ice Wolves for Teddy Bear Toss night at the Northern Lights Palace. Fans are encouraged to bring stuffed animals to the game and throw them onto the ice when Melfort scores their first goal.
