Briltz scores twice in third to lead Trojans to win over Contacts

The Tisdale Trojans continue to have the Saskatoon Contacts number in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League.

Sunday, Jan. 5 in Saskatoon was meeting number four of four this season between the two clubs, and heading into the game, Tisdale was seventh in the league standings, while the Contacts were tied for first place.

However, on this night, it was the Trojans who came back from their Christmas break and pulled out a 5-4 win, their third win on the year against the Contacts.

Assistant Coach Daven Smith said they needed to keep things simple.

“We had the break,” he said. “We were not sure what’s going to happen coming into this game, just making sure the boys were getting their feet going, getting pucks on net and finishing on our chances when they were there.”

The teams skated to a 0-0 score after the first period with both clubs getting a few scoring chances, but both goalies stood tall.

The Contacts opened the scoring in the second frame on a powerplay as Alex Bernauer scored on a scramble in front. Tisdale didn’t let the lead stand for very long as a minute and 20 seconds later, Mackenzie Carson finished off a nice feed from Kalen Ukrainetz to tie it up.

The teams went back and forth throughout the period, until 23 seconds remained when Keagon Little burst wide on a Contact defender. He lost the puck as he cut in front of the net, but it found its way to the trailing Zac Robins who made no mistake on the wrist shot to make it 2-1.

However, Matthew Hodson got some room with 10 seconds left and fired a wrist shot passed Trojan netminder Hunter Lolacher to tied things back up heading into the second frame.

“We were kind of preaching the same things in between periods,” Smith said. “Just maybe took the boys a couple of periods to get it through the boys’ heads after the Christmas break there, but obviously in the third, you saw that happen, so that obviously paid off.”

From puck drop in the third, the Trojans came out hard, firing plenty of pucks at the Saskatoon net, and Carter Briltz was the one who got rewarded, scoring tow goals from nearly the same spot before five minutes had even ticked off the clock in the period and just like that it was 4-2 Tisdale. Riley Heidt made it 4-3 on a shorthanded marker with under nine minutes to play, but Noah Wills restored the two-goal lead on a tip in front. Hodson scored his second of the night with about two-and-a-half to play to make it 5-4, but the Trojans locked it down after that, grabbing the win.

Tisdale improved to 16-12-0-1 with the win, which has them in seventh place still, but just one point back of sixth place. The Trojans visit Moose Jaw and Swift Current on Jan. 11 and 12.
