The Government of Saskatchewan announced the latest round of grants from its Provincial Traffic Safety Fund on Thursday, Jan. 9.

One of the handful of northeast communities to receive funding was the Town of Hudson Bay which received $12,880.66 to install a pedestrian beacon, and speed display sign in the town. Chief Administrative Officer Teresa Parkman said the beacon will help in a busy area of town.

“We applied for an area where there’s a lot fo pedestrian traffic,” she said. “Because of where our pool, and playground, and school, and skateboard park, tennis courts are situated.”

The beacon will have flashing lights so vehicles from both directions can see when pedestrians are crossing.

The speed display sign will go up in a residential area of Hudson Bay.

“We find some traffic is picking up speed, and unfortunately our RCMP can’t be everywhere at all times,” Parkman said adding she hopes the sign will help keep kids walking to school safe.

She cited the city’s other speed display sign and said it’s worked well by the school.

With almost $13,000 in funding for Hudson Bay to be able to make these installments, Parkman said it’s been a big help.

“We talked about getting another speed sign,” she said. “But the pedestrian beacon sign is a tremendous help on both sides because it wouldn’t have happened without the funding.”

Other than Hudson Bay, a couple of other communities were able to receive funding. The Town of Lanigan received $15,851 for speed display signs. The R.M. of St. Louis received $7,515.69 for a speed display sign and speed bumps, and the Village of Annaheim will erect speed display signs with its $7,459.81 grant.
