‘It was just ugly’: Mustangs blown out by Bombers

Things did not go according to plan on Saturday for the Melfort Mustangs as they made the trip to Flin Flon to play the Bombers.

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) game ended in a 9-0 decision for the Bombers in a key Sherwood Division matchup.

“I think they were going right off the bat, we were maybe a bit flat,” Mustangs Assistant Coach Trevor Logan said. “I thought we held on for a little while, then they were coming, their big guys were coming and we just didn’t seem to have enough to match it tonight, for whatever reason and we’ve got to figure it out.”

Matt Flodell got the Bombers on the board just 2:16 into the contest. The home team didn’t look back from there as Alec Malo and Donavon Houle-Villenueve scored on separate powerplays late in the frame to make it 3-0 after the first. Tanner Martin was pulled for the Mustangs at that point after allowing three goals on 14 shots, making way for veteran Shawn Parkinson.

Things were a little bit better for Melfort in the second as they only allowed one goal, that to Tristan Lemyre with less than five to play in the frame. The Mustangs did have a few chances but couldn’t seem to solve Jacob Delorme who stopped 20 shots in the Bomber net through two periods. He had 27 overall for his first career SJHL shutout.

In the third, things took a turn for the worst as the Bombers went into high gear. Malo scored twice to complete the hat-trick while Jaden Mercier, Chase Haygarth, and Dane Hirst scored to round out the nine goal performance.

“I’m not really sure exactly what all went on here tonight, it was just ugly,” Logan told northeastNOW. “And there’s not a whole bunch you could say about it. I mean they just kept going and going and going and we just didn’t have an answer. Every time you thought we had something going, it kind of got shut down, went the other way, and ended up in the back of our net.”

Melfort will get a chance to rebound on Wednesday, Jan. 15 as they host the La Ronge Ice Wolves.
