Mustangs break through, beat Red Wings 4-1

Jan 29, 2020 | 2:23 AM

A single goal kept things tense for the longest time during the Melfort Mustangs’ 4-1 win over the Weyburn Red Wings at Northern Lights Palace on Tuesday, Jan. 28.

Mustangs forward Tian Rask put back the rebound just over a minute into the first period to make it 1-0 Melfort and it took nearly 50 minutes for either team to score a goal.

Even with both goaltenders, Shawn Parkinson for the Mustangs and Joseph Young for the Red Wings, not blinking at any scoring chance they faced, Mustangs center Kenzie Arnold said his team didn’t have concerns about extending the lead.

“When it’s only a 1-0 game we just try and focus on defence,” Arnold told northeastNOW. “We got the lead, so we cheat to the defence. If we keep playing good defence, we’ll get goals.”

And the Mustangs got goals: Arnold was sent on a breakaway scored top shelf to give Melfort a 2-0 lead 11 minutes into the third period thanks to a pass from his defenceman Alex Rondeau.

In his second game as a Mustang, winger Austin Nault scored on a passing play with the man advantage to make it 3-0 two minutes later. The Mustangs hung on to win 4-1.

Looking ahead

With the win, the Mustangs exit with a 3-4-2 record in the month of January.

Arnold’s happy to leave January again, as last season’s Mustangs also had a rougher go in the same month with a 2-6-2 record.

“Every team goes through slumps,” he said. “We were in a slump but this win helped us and we’re just coming out of it. We’re going to roll from here on out. I know it.”

The Mustangs sit fourth in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) standings with 54 points (24-15-3-3) in 45 games. They’re ahead of their division rival and the fifth-place Nipawin Hawks by one point with a game in hand, and trail the third-place Yorkton Terriers by two points with two games in hand.

The Mustangs host the eighth-place Estevan Bruins at Northern Lights Palace on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 7:30 p.m.
