Tisdale and Melfort set to host first Q-Spiels for U18 Women and Men

Feb 4, 2020 | 5:00 PM

A couple of local curling clubs are gearing up for some Under-18 Q-Spiels taking place Feb. 7 to 9.

The Q-Spiels are the first chance for U18 teams to try and qualify for the provincial championships that take place in late March.

Tisdale gets the women’s event this weekend, and Event Chair Bob Jackson said it’s going to be a weekend full of talented curlers. There’s even a handful of curlers who were in Tisdale ion December for the Junior Q-Spiel.

“Some of them that didn’t make it there are here now,” Jackson said. “So, there’s some pretty good curling going to be on this weekend.”

There are also a handful of local teams, representing places like Tisdale, Nipawin, and Carrot River.

Not only is this event the first of a few leading up to the U18 Provincials, it’s somewhat of a lead up to a big event happening in Tisdale next year.

“CurlSask has a new format that they are laying out,” Jackson told northeastNOW. “This is the first time that they’ve done it, and there will be an announcement at about 6 or 7 p.m. on Friday evening, upstairs in the lounge of the Tisdale Curling Club.”

The event is expected to feature more than one level of curling.

Meanwhile, the Melfort Curling Club will be home to the men’s event of the Q-Spiel. While it’s not a provincial championship, event chair Gerald MacGillvray said it’s still an event to help give some notoriety to the Melfort club.

“No matter what event you hold,” he said. “If it’s a success, and you have good ice, and it runs good, then of course it’s good for the club.”

The Melfort Curling Club has held provincial events over the last few years including the Provincial Scotties, and the Club Provincials.

Other local communities are also hosting some tournaments this weekend. Nipawin is holding the Senior Men’s North Qualifier, while Wadena has the first Q-Spiel for the Senior Women’s.
