Fundraising fishing derby taking place this weekend

Lakeland and District Fire Department is inviting people to drop their lines in the water for a good cause this weekend.

The department will host its third annual fundraising fishing derby Saturday afternoon at Emma Lake’s Murray Point.

Martin Taylor, a primary care paramedic and firefighter, is organizing this year’s derby for the department. He said the funds help pay for the department’s new building along with extra items.

“Any extra funds are going to go towards new equipment, new shelving, stuff like that for the hall once it’s built,” he said.

The derby has cash prizes ranging from $300 to $1,500. Other prizes donated from sponsors will also be available. So far roughly 50 tickets were sold and Taylor expects more to sell before the event. The cost per hole is $50.

The new department building will be constructed in Christopher Lake, across from the current department. Taylor said the new hall will save time and money by consolidating all trucks and equipment into one space.

“We’d like to have it all in one hall, whereas right now we have several satellite halls,” he said.

The event begins at 10 a.m. and runs until 2 p.m. Food will be for sale on site and ice huts are permitted. No fishing licence is required as it is a free fishing weekend in the province.
