Four in a Row

Mustangs stay perfect on homestand with win over Hounds

Feb 22, 2020 | 3:02 AM

Prior to a Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) matchup on Friday, the Melfort Mustangs had beaten the Flin Flon Bombers, Melville Millionaires, and Estevan Bruins to start a five game homestand.

On Friday, it was the Notre Dame Hounds who fell victim to the Mustangs for Melfort’s fourth win in a row, this one by a final score of 3-1.

After a tough stretch coming out of the new year, the Mustangs have started to find their groove according to forward Kenzie Arnold.

“We were obviously in a bit of a slump there after Christmas, and it was stressful,” he said. “But now we’re out of it and we’re perfect timing for playoffs.”

Arnold got Melfort on the board first as he tipped in a point shot just over seven minutes into the game. Ten minutes later Ben Tkachuk put one in for Melfort to make it 2-0 after the first period. Melfort outshot Notre Dame 12-4 in the frame and it seemed to be almost completely in the Notre Dame zone.

Period two saw more dominance by the Mustangs, but they were only able to get one by Hounds goaltender Logan Dyck who stopped 15 of 16 shots in the frame. Tian Rask was the only one to beat Dyck as he showed some patience cutting through the slot to finally fire one into an empty cage.

The Hounds showed some life in the third period as they had a couple powerplay chances. However, they were only able to get eight shots towards Mustang goalie Shawn Parkinson in the period and 18 in the game. Jared Hamm scored the lone Hounds goal about seven minutes into the third but it was all they would muster.

Arnold said while they’ve played well during this home stretch, they can’t get too ahead of themselves.

“Can’t get too high on ourselves and get too cocky,” Arnold said. “But we just have to keep playing how we are, we’re playing awesome, we’re using each other, and everyone is going, all four lines, all [defence] and all goalies.”

Melfort closes out their homestand on Saturday as they welcome the Weyburn Red Wings to the Northern Lights Palace.
