Slow Down, Move Over

Cudworth and Wakaw emergency services participate in Slow Down, Move Over campaign

Mar 6, 2020 | 5:01 PM

Slow down, move over.

That’s the message emergency services in Wakaw and Cudworth want to get across on Saturday, March 7 when they partake in the Slow Down Move Over Awareness Campaign, an initiative that encourages drivers to slow down for emergency vehicles across North America.

Nearly 22 fire trucks, ambulances, police vehicles, and tow trucks will be parked at the intersection of Highway 2 and 41. Their lights will be turned on as emergency services will try to catch the attention of drivers and encourage them to slow down.

“We’ll just be out there on the sides of the roads,” Cudworth Fire Chief Darwin Lariviere told northeastNOW. “We won’t be stopping traffic or anything.”

According to Saskatchewan RCMP, there were 199 charges laid for drivers going over 60 km/h – the maximum allowed when passing an emergency vehicle with its emergency lights in operation on a highway.

Lariviere said most drivers passing through the Cudworth and Wakaw area will slow down for emergency vehicles, but they’ve had a few near misses.

“We haven’t had anybody hit yet and hopefully that never happens,” he said. “We’ve had many times where we’ve been on the highways at accident scenes and people just don’t slow down. That, or they want to drive by with their phones taking pictures. We don’t want that either because you’re not paying attention to what’s around you.

“Sorry to slow you down folks. But slow down, never mind the pictures, and keep on rolling and let us do our jobs safely.”

The emergency vehicles will be parked at the intersection for 6 p.m.
