Town of Nipawin hosting open house this week

Nipawin residents have a chance to learn more about the future of the community, and to also have a say on that future.

The Town of Nipawin is hosting an open house Thursday, March 12.

The event will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Nipawin Evergreen Centre.

Chief Administrative Officer Barry Elliott told northeastNOW the open houses give the public an update on what’s happening in the community on issues including the recent budget, and Nipawin’s strategic plan.

“We’ll have those documents there so people can have a look at [them] and ask questions of the various department heads,” Elliott said.

There will also be more information on the progress of the new water treatment plant, and some impending park improvements.

“Also, our planner has a bit of a survey that he’s trying to get some feedback on in relation to some development in part of town,” Elliott said.

He said getting public input, and being transparent is critically important for the town.

“I know that council is always seeking to ensure that the public is firstly informed, and that they have an opportunity to provide their feedback,” Elliott said. He said council is here to represent their constituents, and they want to know what the community’s general thoughts.

The recently completed draft traffic study will also be discussed. The consultant has issued a number of recommendations for improvements, and someone will be on hand to discuss the document.

Elliott said the document is a draft at this point, and has not been approved by council. He said they are looking for public feedback on the study.

The open house is typically set up in stations so people can go to any station they wish. Elliott said that can give residents a chance to have more direct dialogue with people best positioned to answer their questions.

Elliott said most of council should be at the open house to connect with people as well.
