Finding Common Ground Workshop and Film Screening
In recognition of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, the Prince Albert Common Ground Project and our community partners invite you to join us on Thursday, March 19th for a free Colonialism on Canvas workshop, a free screening of the award-winning documentary, “The Pass System”, followed with a panel discussion.
Colonialism on Canvas: A Two-Spirit Perspective” is an interactive session which uses art as a way to present the 5 Stages of Colonialism and how the stages affected Indigenous peoples and Two-Spirit people. This workshop creates a safe space to have conversations and reflections between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Peoples and about historical topics that affect Indigenous and Two-Spirit people today. If you can paint squares, triangles, and circles then you can participate! The painting and info portion is followed by a sharing of the reflections you had during the experience and how that knowledge can be implemented in the work you do.
The Pass System illuminates Canada’s hidden history of racial segregation. For over 60 years, the Canadian government often denied Indigenous peoples the basic freedom to leave their reserves without a pass. Cree, Saulteaux, Dene, Ojibwe and Blackfoot elders of the prairie land where this took place tell their stories of living under and resisting the system and linking their experiences to the present day. Acclaimed Cree actor and activist Tantoo Cardinal (Dances with Wolves, Legends of the Fall) narrates this investigative look into a little-known side Canadian History.
A share your story, Community Panel and Q and A session will follow.
